Tuberscan – Agritech Innovation

Tuberscan – Agritech Innovation

Agritech Video Production for Innovate UK

Cass Productions produced this agritech video production for Innovate UK, showcasing Tuberscan — an innovative crop-scanning system designed to help potato growers better understand crop size and potential yield.

Filmed on location at a working farm in Lincolnshire, the case study combines interviews, technology demonstrations, agricultural footage and aerial cinematography to explain a complex innovation in a clear and visually engaging way.

Capturing innovation in the field

Tuberscan combines 3D camera mapping and ground-penetrating radar to scan potato crops and assess their size and potential yield. The technology can give growers valuable information to support decisions around harvesting and help reduce waste.
Our challenge was to make that technology understandable without losing the science behind it. Filming the system operating in a real agricultural environment allowed us to combine explanation with demonstration, showing viewers both what Tuberscan does and how it can be applied in practice.

Showing the scale from the air

Lincolnshire’s open farmland provided a strong visual setting for aerial filming. The symmetry of the crop lines and movement of machinery allowed us to create cinematic establishing shots while also showing the scale of the environment in which the technology operates.
Combining drone footage with ground-level filming helped give the case study visual variety and put Tuberscan into its real-world context.

Turning complex innovation into a clear story

Research and innovation films often need to communicate technical ideas to audiences with very different levels of specialist knowledge.
For Tuberscan, we combined interviews with footage of the technology in operation, agricultural B-roll and aerial cinematography. The result was a case study that could explain the innovation while still being visually engaging for a wider audience.
It’s an approach we’ve developed through our long-standing work with Innovate UK and other research and innovation organisations: understanding the subject first, then finding the clearest and most engaging way to communicate it on screen.
