Educational Animations for GCSE Chemistry – A BBC Bitesize Project

At Cass Productions, we specialise in educational animations for GCSE Chemistry that is engaging, accurate, and accessible. One of our most exciting collaborations was with BBC Bitesize, the UK’s flagship educational platform, on a series of animations supporting the WJEC Chemistry specification for GCSE students in Wales.

This high-impact project involved producing 11 bilingual animations, each designed to help students better understand key chemistry concepts. The animations were made available in both English and Welsh, making them accessible to a wider student audience and aligning with the needs of Welsh-language education.

Project Goals and Educational Impact

The BBC Bitesize team approached us to bring science topics to life with clarity, creativity, and precision—hallmarks of the BBC’s reputation for trusted learning resources. The objective was to produce educational animations for GCSE Chemistry that would enhance curriculum engagement and make revision more effective and enjoyable for students.

To meet these goals, we worked in partnership with:

  • Educational consultants who ensured pedagogical alignment

  • Subject matter experts to verify scientific accuracy

  • Scriptwriters and content producers from the BBC to tailor tone and structure

Their collaboration ensured that each animation accurately reflected the WJEC exam board’s learning outcomes while remaining easy to follow for students and teachers alike.

Production Process and Collaboration

Our in-house team managed the entire animation workflow from concept to delivery:

  • Scriptwriting and editing in both English and Welsh, with attention to curriculum-specific terminology

  • Storyboarding key sequences to visually map each topic

  • Character and background design that appealed to secondary school learners

  • 2D animation using bold colours and clean motion graphics

  • Voiceover casting to reflect both languages accurately

  • Post-production, including subtitles, music, and SFX

We also introduced the Bitesize team to the project management tool Azendoo, which centralised communications and streamlined the feedback process. This efficient workflow allowed our team to deliver high-quality animations within tight deadlines, while managing complex multi-language outputs.

Working in both languages presented unique creative challenges, but it also ensured the final product was inclusive, culturally sensitive, and aligned with BBC standards.

Making Chemistry Clear and Engaging

Creating educational animation for GCSE Chemistry requires a careful balance of scientific accuracy and visual simplicity. Each animation was designed to make complex topics, such as atomic structure, bonding, chemical reactions, and energy changes, more understandable and memorable.

We used:

  • Visual metaphors to explain abstract concepts such as atomic structure and electron shells
  • Step-by-step visuals of chemical reactions and processes
  • Captioned keywords and formulae to enhance retention
  • Smooth transitions and split-screen views for comparison learning

Animations were optimised for classroom use, revision sessions, and independent learning at home, helping students feel more confident about their exams.
