Living with Schizophrenia

Living with Schizophrenia

Medical Animation Production from our Animation and video company in Southampton, Hampshire – Exploring a Promising New Approach

Schizophrenia treatment has remained largely unchanged for decades. For over 50 years, patients have relied on antipsychotic medications that often come with severe side effects and limited effectiveness, particularly when it comes to addressing cognitive symptoms. Our Medical Animation Production was a creative and engaging way to demonstrate this.

According to the World Health Organisation, schizophrenia affects more than 21 million people worldwide. It is a serious and chronic mental health condition that causes delusions, hallucinations, disorganised thinking, cognitive impairment, and social withdrawal. Many individuals living with schizophrenia also experience low self-esteem, anxiety, and difficulty maintaining employment or independence.

Despite its prevalence, treatment options have not evolved significantly, leaving a gap in care for the millions affected globally. This innovative new schizophrenia treatment is thoughtfully explored through our medical animation production.

The Limitations of Current Schizophrenia Treatments

Current schizophrenia treatment protocols often centre around antipsychotic drugs, occasionally supplemented by psychotherapy or psychosocial support. While these medications can help reduce the severity of positive symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, they typically do little to improve cognitive function, which plays a critical role in daily functioning.

Unfortunately, these medications are also known for a range of debilitating side effects, including:

  • Significant weight gain

  • Sedation and fatigue

  • Movement disorders (e.g. tremors, rigidity)

  • Emotional flattening

  • Increased risk of long-term neurological complications

These side effects often lead to poor adherence, with patients discontinuing treatment or skipping doses. As a result, many individuals struggle to regain independence or participate fully in daily life.

There is an urgent need for new treatment options that not only target the psychotic features of schizophrenia but also improve cognitive function and overall quality of life.

A New Approach to Schizophrenia Treatment from Autonify Therapeutics

Autifony Therapeutics, a UK-based biotech company focused on central nervous system disorders, is pioneering a new approach to schizophrenia treatment. Their experimental drug, AUT00206, aims to address the cognitive deficits at the core of the condition.

Rather than targeting dopamine pathways like traditional antipsychotics, AUT00206 focuses on restoring the function of specific brain circuits responsible for memory, attention, and decision-making. These circuits are often disrupted in people with schizophrenia, and their dysfunction is believed to contribute significantly to the day-to-day challenges patients face.

Dr Charles Large, CEO of Autifony, explains:
“If our drug proves effective, it could be revolutionary. It would enable patients to return to a level of functioning compatible with employment and independent living—with far fewer side effects.”

This shift toward cognitive restoration could signal a new era in schizophrenia treatment, one that empowers individuals to live more independently and reconnect with their communities.

Lived Experience: Rich’s Story

The conversation around treatment isn’t complete without acknowledging the voices of those directly impacted. One such voice is Rich, who has lived with schizophrenia for many years.

Rich shares what it’s like to navigate the world with this condition, from managing symptoms and medication to dealing with stigma and misunderstanding. He describes how current treatment options often feel like a compromise: reducing some symptoms while creating new challenges through side effects.

“The meds help, but they don’t help me think clearly. I still struggle with decisions, and that’s the hardest part when you’re trying to live a normal life.”

Rich’s perspective is vital in understanding the real-world impact of limited treatment options. His story adds a human dimension to the discussion, grounding innovation in real-life need to this medical animation.

Why Cognitive Function Matters in Schizophrenia

Cognition is often overlooked in schizophrenia treatment, but it’s crucial. Improved cognitive performance can allow individuals to:

  • Live more autonomously

  • Maintain employment and housing

  • Rebuild relationships

  • Participate more fully in therapy and rehabilitation

  • Reduce reliance on carers or institutional support

By focusing on cognitive enhancement, AUT00206 offers the potential to improve functional outcomes, not just symptom reduction.
