UKRI – RRS Sir David Attenborough
Being asked to create as series of videos to promote the naming of the RRS Sir David Attenborough (SDA) was a huge privilege. The SDA is one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world. It was commissioned by NERC, built by Cammell Laird and is operated by the British Antarctic Survey.
UK Research and Innovation commissioned us to produce a suite of live-action videos and animations to be shown at the official naming ceremony.
The four live-action videos cover a range of subjects including the ship’s construction, the science and careers opportunities. We used existing footage of the ship’s build, combined with new footage captured at a hectic media day. Our camera crew had to think on their feet and capture high-quality footage despite tight time constraints and filming on board a ship that was still under construction!
Cass Productions also produced a series of vibrant, eye-catching animations which were released on social media in the run up to the naming of the new RRS Sir David Attenborough. We worked closely with the British Antarctic Survey to educate the public about the capabilities of the new research vessel and the role it will play monitoring climate change in the Antarctic. The animations combined information with humour, creative character design, emotive music and voiceover.
Subjects covered in the series included ‘Life on Board’, ‘About the Ship’ and this one about wildlife in the polar regions –
